The Rag Man

The Rag Man

13 /3/09

I remember as a child the rag man calling round to our street, there was great excitement in those days, when the rag man called.
We would have to get a rag from our mothers and even at that rags were scarce.

I remember begging Mammy for a rag, you would be very lucky to get one,
because in those days they had to hold on to them to patch sheets together.

So I got my rag, a small one, the bigger the rag the bigger the toy, the smaller the rag the smaller the toy. I can remember the rag man the first time he called around to our street.
I think he had a horse and cart, it was a little wagon, the wagon was covered over
with green canvas.

We would go over to the rag man with our rags, he would roll the canvas back,
and then we could see what toys he had. I was always the one to get a small toy,
but we all shared our toys when the rag man left.
As far back as I can remember, the rag mans wagon contained spinning tops, whistles, marbles and dolls, and we played for hours with those lovely toys.

Later on the rag man had a little truck, with all the same toys.
I just don’t know what happened to the rag man, he stopped coming to our street and that was the end of our toys and the rag man.

God Bless that Rag Man.

He made us very happy, and he will always stay in my mind .

That Lovely Rag Man.
